Father John P. Hogan

Fr. John HoganFather John P. Hogan, at the age of 64 and a priest for 38 years, died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, in Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

Father Hogan was born on September 18, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Mary Catherine (Powers) Hogan. He attended Ita School and St. Gertrude School, both in Chicago, Illinois, Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Niles, Illinois, Holy Cross Seminary High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, St. Mary College in Winona, Minnesota, and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained on June 2, 1973 at Saint Joseph Cathedral in La Crosse by the Most Reverend Frederick W. Freking.

Father Hogan’s first assignment following ordination was as Associate Pastor of Notre Dame Parish in Chippewa Falls on June 15, 1973. In August of 1975 he was appointed Associate Pastor of Holy Name Parish in Wausau. On July 18, 1979 he was assigned as Temporary Administrator of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Knowlton. On August 31, 1979 Father Hogan was appointed as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Altdorf, Administrator of All Saints Parish in Babcock and as an Instructor at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1981 he was released from his responsibilities as Administrator of All Saints Parish in Babcock, while continuing as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Altdorf and as Instructor at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1989 he was appointed as Pastor of St. Lawrence Parish in Wisconsin Rapids, and in 1996 he was also appointed as Pastor of St. Philip Parish in Rudolph. In October of 2005, Father Hogan was appointed as Parochial Administrator of St. Raymond of Peñafort Parish in Southern Eau Claire County. In 2009 he was then appointed Pastor of St. Raymond of Peñafort Parish, where he continued to serve until his death.

Father Hogan has also served Chaplain to St. Bede Monastery in Eau Claire and as Dean of the Wisconsin Rapids Deanery.

Father Hogan is survived by three sisters, Denise Olson of Chicago, Illinois, Patti (Jim) Moore of Palatine, Illinois, Terri Hogan of Chicago, Illinois, one brother Brian Hogan of Chicago, Illinois, three nephews and one niece.

Father Hogan was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Hogan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Saint Raymond of Peñafort Church in Southern Eau Claire County (Fall Creek). Bishop William Callahan will be the main celebrant and Father Joseph Hirsch will be the homilist. Visitation will be held at St. Raymond of Peñafort Church on Thursday, July 21, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with Evening Prayer from the Office of the Dead at 7:30 p.m. Father James Kurzynski will preside.   Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Altdorf. Father Chester Osowski will preside at the committal service on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

The Diocese of La Crosse and the family are being assisted by the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.
